Opening Day - What to Expect
Know before you schlep all the way to Wimberley.
What time do I drop off my child?
10:00 AM – 12:00 PM, whatever time works for you within that window. We've streamlined things this year to keep the car line moving — less waiting, more waving goodbye.
Taking the bus? Houston departs 9:00 AM, Dallas departs 8:00 AM. Arrive 15–20 minutes early. At the bus stop you'll meet CYJ staff, hand over medications, load bags under the bus, and get in one last giant hug before they're off.
No phones or tablets — on the bus or at camp. The bus is where the camp experience starts: new friends, new things, zero screens. We'll play a movie they've probably never seen, so the "no technology" thing kicks in right on schedule.
What's the drop-off procedure?
-
Follow signs and staff into camp
-
Lice + temperature check for every camper
-
Drop bags at the designated spot
-
Walk through the CYJ Summer Gate (look for the balloon arch) to your camper's Aidah table
-
Meet the madrich/a (counselor) and merakez/et (Unit Head) and check in
This gate is the spot for goodbyes — the classic photo-op moment of the summer.
Can I walk my camper to the bunk?
Sure! Just keep it brief — a few minutes to help them find their new home. We ask that you don't unpack for them or move name tags around. We make it easy, your child cannot unpack or make their bed until you leave. Bunk dynamics start forming the second they arrive, and our counselors will help unpack.
Where do I hang out afterward?
Head to the Parent Station near the balloon arch for coffee, light refreshments, and a chance to meet other CYJ parents — plus chat with the Directors if you'd like.
How long should I stay?
All parents should depart at the latest by 12:30 PM. Right after, campers head to lunch together to officially kick off summer. Quick goodbyes beat long ones, and honestly, so does the coffee at the Parent Station.
