What Makes a Successful CYJ Camper?
I've watched tens of thousands of kids come through these gates. The ones who thrive aren't necessarily the most athletic, or the most social, or the most Jewish-ly educated. They share a handful of traits that have nothing to do with any of that.
1. Kindness and Respect (Chesed)
The foundation for every positive experience at CYJ is chesed — radical kindness. Real respect for all people (including yourself), all places (from the Chadar Ochel to your bunk), all things, and all ideas. Even the ones you disagree with.
2. Listen Up and Stick Together
CYJ is a community that only works when people follow directions and stay with their group. Knowing where you need to be — and actually being there — keeps everyone safe and the community strong.
3. Master the Basics of Bunk Life
Campers who can shower, brush their teeth, and keep track of their own stuff are set up to succeed. When you can take care of yourself, you're free to dive into everything else.
4. Bring Your Enthusiasm
Curiosity and excitement about joining the ruach (spirit) are the most important skills you can pack. And they don't weigh anything, which is helpful because your duffel is already overweight.
5. Say "Yes!" to Everything
From the waterslides to the ropes course, the campers who thrive are flexible and go-with-the-flow. A positive attitude means navigating a busy schedule, making friends in a new cabin, and finding your chug without missing a beat.
6. Embrace the Great Big Sleepover
Campers who are comfortable sleeping away from home — or who are working on getting there — thrive at CYJ. Practice sleepovers before camp. It genuinely helps.
